In Portugal, February is synonymous with “Carnival.” From February 13th to 17th, Lisbon and its surroundings are immersed in an atmosphere of non-stop celebration. The festivities culminate on “Fat Tuesday” (Shrove Tuesday), February 17th, which is a public holiday in the country.
During these days, the city streets, especially in the Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré districts, turn into a massive open-air stage. You can expect infectious samba rhythms, colorful street parades, impromptu parties, and, of course, incredible costumes. Don’t hesitate to join the fun—you can easily find a mask or a bright accessory in local shops to become part of this grand show.
